In Matthew 20:28, I come across a challenging description of Jesus..."The Son of Man came...to serve and to give..." (NRSV)
This is where the rub comes. God's goal for my life is to become like Jesus (Romans 8:29). If Jesus is all about serving and giving, then I have a long way to go. My natural tendency is to worry about myself first--being others focused comes a lot lower on the list. And usually, I only do it when I can get some kind of a kickback for me.
Fortunately, God doesn't expect overnight change in me...
He's OK with everyday progress because it's a life-long process.
