As children, we were taught to “behave”.
If we behaved properly, good things happened...
If we misbehaved, not-so-good things happened.
Over time, we learned there are certain things you don’t do with your spouse, boss or teacher in the room. We learned it doesn’t work out well if you do those things you’re not supposed to at school, work or home.
We learned to modify our words/actions for certain environments. We’ve developed a filter—a way to modify what we say or do—so we can properly function in life, make a living, enjoy relationships.
But have you noticed that sometimes our filter doesn’t work?
Sometimes a word or action slips through the filter and we say…
“I can’t believe I just said that…I can’t believe I just did that…
That’s not like me…I don't know where that came from."
Jesus says..."It came from your heart."
Notice how clearly Jesus puts it...“The words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you...From the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you.” (Matthew 15:18-20)
I need to pay attention to what I'm saying and doing because that’s what is lurking inside my heart...
And eventually that’s what will make its way into all of my relationships!
