One
week ago, Pastor Robert Asserian was arrested by Iranian authorities as he led
the prayer service at his church in Tehran. The arrest followed a search and
seizure at his home, during which a computer and several books were
confiscated. Asserian's church, Central Assemblies of God, is the largest
Persian-language Pentecostal church in Iran. The government closed the church's
doors one week after Asserian's arrest. These actions appear to reflect a
growing trend toward government intolerance of Christians, an intolerance that
coincides with Iran's upcoming presidential election.
