This is a fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo. God reaching out as far as He can while Adam is effortlessly reaching out to God. God is only a lift of the finger away.
We've used this imagery during a 6 week study called "God is closer than you think." So I know there's no coincidence that I read this verse today..."God is not far from each one of us." (Acts 17:27 NRSV)
I've come away with 2 truths that are changing the way I think...
(1) I realize more than ever that God desires to be with me. I have seen this most in Exodus 34:14..."God is passionate about His relationship with you." (NLT) I've never thought along the lines of God being "passionate" about me. God is very motivated about being in a 24/7 relationship with me.
(2) I have learned that even with all of his desire and effort, whether or not to be close to God rests in my choosing. I must make a conscious, intentional effort to grow in my awareness of God. I must take steps to maintain a relationship of listening to Him and enjoying His presence everyday.
All too often I cruise through life oblivious of how close God is.
I have been asking God to open my eyes so I can see Him more.
